Smart Mining Futures

Harnessing Earth Observation and Machine Learning for a Resilient Europe

PROJECT RESULTS | ESMIN | WORKSHOP

NH Collection Brussels Centre

Thursday, 20th November 2025

09:00-13:00

About the Event

MultiMiner is advancing the critical raw materials (CRM) mining sector by developing innovative Earth Observation (EO) and Machine Learning (ML) approaches. These tools enhance mineral exploration, improve the sustainability and safety of mining operations, reinforce environmental protection, and enable smarter decision-making across the CRM mining value chain.

At this Smart Mining Futures side-event during EU Raw Materials Week, we will:

  • Showcase MultiMiner key exploitable results such as novel mineral mapping algorithms, prospectivity wizard, generic mine site monitoring and specialised environmental hazards monitoring algorithm.

  • Showcase results from sister projects related to EO and ML innovations and explore synergies and collaboration opportunities
  • Highlight tools and training resources designed for geological surveys, mining operators, and policymakers.

  • Explore how these innovations can support Europe’s Critical Raw Materials Act and wider raw materials strategy.

Summary of key insights and roadmap highlights, closing remarks, and invitation to networking lunch.

13:00 Networking Lunch

Interactive Exploitation Roadmap Workshop

The highlight of the session is a hands-on exploitation roadmap exercise. Participants will work in breakout groups on specific topics (e.g. CRM exploration, mining operations, environmental monitoring). Groups will map out:

  • Immediate opportunities for demonstration and uptake of MultiMiner results

  • Synergies with sister project results and collaboration opportunities

  • Long-term pathways for development and adoption by mining industry and other end-users

The outputs will feed into a joint exploitation roadmap that will be co-created and shared with participants after the event.

Who Should Attend?

  • Geological surveys seeking to apply EO/ML innovations.
  • Mining industry representatives interested in novel exploration and monitoring tools.
  • Researchers and technology developers working on EO, ML, and raw materials.
  • Environmental authorities and sustainability experts interested in monitoring mine site impacts, supporting responsible mining practices, and integrating EO-based environmental data into regulatory processes.
  • European National and policy and funding bodies engaged in the Critical Raw Materials Act and EU raw materials strategy

Registration Form – Smart Mining Futures

Register to join the Smart Mining Futures workshop, a side-event of EU Raw Materials Week 2025 organised by the MultiMiner project and the European Science Foundation. The session (Thursday, 20 November, 09:00–13:00, NH Collection Brussels Centre) will present new Earth Observation and Machine Learning tools for the raw materials sector and include an interactive roadmap workshop on how these innovations can be taken up by end-users, industry, and geological surveys. Participation is free, but registration is required to ensure an engaging, hands-on format.
